A company in Ivory Coast is transforming hard-to-recycle plastic waste into durable bricks and beams for construction. The discarded plastic is collected, shredded, melted, and molded into building components that can be assembled more quickly and affordably than many traditional materials.
The project is helping address two major challenges at once: plastic pollution and a shortage of school buildings. By using recycled plastic to construct classrooms, waste that might otherwise end up in streets or landfills is being given a new purpose while creating much-needed spaces for children to learn.
The system also creates economic opportunities for local waste collectors by increasing the value of the plastic they gather and helping boost their income. While questions remain about the long-term durability and environmental impact of plastic construction, the project shows how creative recycling can turn waste into jobs, building materials, and education.
