Stones Throw Limited Edition – J. Rocc Live from the Dungeon on the Roland SP-404MKII

J. Rocc stepped into The Dungeon to make beats with exclusive sounds from the Roland and Stones Throw collaboration, offering a closer look at its special-edition SP-404MKII. The session also unveiled the custom metallic faceplate, giving the sampler a distinctive look to match the music inside.
Preloaded with music from Stones Throw artists J. Rocc, Sudan Archives, Mndsgn, Kiefer, and DJ Harrison, this edition features 16 patterns and 16 samples in each bank for producers to explore and rework. A collectible 7-inch record and cassette mixtape complete the package, celebrating the connection between beat making and physical music formats.
I recently purchased this machine, and I love it. Although the collaboration has been around for a while, the SP-404MKII still feels like a valuable addition to a studio. In an era when so much music production happens inside a digital audio workstation, there’s something refreshing about working with a standalone sampler. You can take it on the go, experiment with sounds, and build beats without bringing a laptop.
For me, the appeal is that hands-on experience: tapping out rhythms, shaping samples, and letting ideas develop directly on the machine. Whether you’re an experienced producer or someone who enjoys exploring new ways to make music, the SP-404MKII has plenty to offer. I’m glad I added it to my setup, it’s been worth every penny.
